The series of international symposia on Image and Signal Processing and Analysis (ISPA) started in 2000 as a workshop that was organized by Professor Sven Loncaric from University of Zagreb, Croatia, in conjunction with ITI 2000 conference in Croatia. The workshop was co-sponsored by EURASIP and by IEEE Region 8 and printed proceedings were published. The goal of the workshop was to bring together researchers working in the area of signal and image processing. Most of about thirty participants of the workshop came from Europe but there were also participants from other continents.
The second ISPA meeting was organized in 2001. ISPA'01 had about 130 participants from all over the world, which was a large increase in the number of participants. The name of the meeting was changed by replacing the word "workshop" to "symposium" to reflect a larger size of the meeting. ISPA'01 was co-chaired by Professors Hrvoje Babic and Sven Loncaric from University of Zagreb, Croatia. The meeting was co-sponsored by EURASIP and by IEEE Region 8 and printed and CD-ROM proceedings were published. In 2001, a decision was made by the Program Committee to organize ISPA every other year, in order to address the issue of ever growing number of conferences.
The third ISPA meeeting was organized in Rome, Italy, by Professor Alessandro Neri from University of Rome. ISPA'03 had EURASIP and IEEE Signal Processing Society sponsorships. The number of accepted papers increased to about 220 and two-volume paper proceedings and CD-ROM proceedings were published. The symposium program for the first time featured a poster session.
The fourth ISPA meeting was organized in Zagreb, Croatia, by Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, University of Zagreb, Croatia. The meeting was co-chaired by professors Maurice Bellanger and Hrvoje Babic. The sponsors were EURASIP, IEEE Region 8, and IEEE Signal Processing Society.
The fifth ISPA meeting was organized in Istanbul, Turkey, through a joint effort of three universities: Sabanci University, Istanbul, Bogazici University, Istanbul, and University of Zagreb, Croatia. General Co-Chairs were professors Aytul Ercil and Sven Loncaric. The sponsors were EURASIP, IEEE Region 8, IEEE Turkey Section - Signal Processing Society Chapter, and IEEE Croatia Section - Signal Processing Society Chapter.
